Breast augmentation is a highly customizable plastic surgery procedure. It can be undertaken using different surgical techniques for implant size and type, incision placement, and implant positioning.
The choice of a suitable breast implant type is an important decision and one which will impact the final results of the procedure.
At the time of the pre-op consultation process, the surgeon will explain the various available implant options to the patient to help them make an appropriate choice. In selecting breast implants, the patient should consider her desired breast appearance and level of comfort.
The patient should also evaluate the benefits and limitations of various implant types, their approximate sustainability, the risks involved, and how suitable they are to her unique breast structure and specific cosmetic goals.
Virginia Institute of Plastic Surgery, led by board certified plastic surgeons Dr. Burton M. Sundin and Dr. Reps B. Sundin, provides breast implants to patients in Northern Virginia, Washington DC, Vienna, McLean, Loudoun, Ashburn, Tysons Corner, Reston, Arlington, Chevy Chase, Richmond, Fredericksburg, and surrounding communities.
Breast Implant Categories
Breast implants can primarily be classified into two types, i.e., saline implants and silicone gel implants. Both these implant types comprise an outer shell that is made with strong silicone material. But the inner core is different in both types of implants.
Saline Breast Implants
Saline implants have received FDA approval for women over 18 years. These implants have been sought-after in the past and were the only implants to receive FDA approval initially.
Saline implants have an inner core consisting of sterile saline fluid. They are designed to offer better shape and firmness to the breasts.
The advantage of saline implants is that they can be placed surgically in a deflated condition. Subsequently, the saline solution can be filled in as required.
This procedure will involve a smaller incision. In addition, the saline solution is natural and does not cause any complications if the implant tears or ruptures after the surgical procedure.
Silicone Breast Implants
Silicone breast implants received FDA approval after exhaustive assessment for several years. Today, these implants are the most popular implant type for breast augmentation plastic surgery.
Silicone implants provide women with a natural touch and feel along with a superior cosmetic appeal due to the soft gel core, which makes them a sought-after choice for breast enhancement. This implant type can be placed in women over 21 years of age.
The silicone gel core is quite similar in effect to the natural breast tissue. This is the primary reason for the massive popularity of breast enhancement plastic surgery involving silicone implants.
Gummy Bear Implants
Gummy bear implants refer to form stable and ultra cohesive silicone gel implants. These types of implants are the newest to receive FDA approval. The silicone gel core is quite viscous in gummy bear implants, which allows them to remain in shape and retain form even under pressure.
If there is implant damage, the thick silicone gel prevents leakage into other areas of the body. This allows these form stable implants to be safer as well as aesthetically superior.
Saline and silicone implants are available in sizes ranging from 120 cc to 960 cc. Patients may also be able to choose between round and anatomical shapes.
