What should you expect during a consultation for breast augmentation?

shutterstock 134770781 e1557528809999 300x266 - What should you expect during a consultation for breast augmentation? The pre-operative consultation process is a vital part of any plastic surgery procedure, including breast augmentation surgery. Breast augmentation is a highly customizable procedure.

For this reason, the surgeon will focus on developing a targeted treatment plan that can address the unique cosmetic and anatomical needs of the patient.

A comprehensive and detailed consultation process is the foundation for a safe and effective breast augmentation procedure.

The Virginia Institute of Plastic Surgery, led by board certified plastic surgeons Dr. Burton M. Sundin and Dr. Reps B. Sundin, provides breast implant surgery to patients in Northern Virginia, Washington DC, Vienna, McLean, Loudoun, Ashburn, Tysons Corner, Reston, Arlington, Chevy Chase, Richmond, Fredericksburg, and surrounding communities.

    Vital Decisions during the Consultation

Some key decision involved in planning for breast enhancement is implant choice, type of surgical technique, and the likelihood of a breast lift along with the augmentation procedure.

The patient should engage closely with the surgeon during the consultation process regarding these decisions for safe and successful surgery.

    Implant Choices

The size and type of breast implants chosen for the surgery will affect the final outcomes of the procedure. At the time of the pre-operative consultation, the breast surgeon will elaborate on the differences between saline, silicone, and ultra cohesive breast implants.

They will also discuss the benefits and limitations of each type of implant. The surgeon and patient will have to make choices on the implant size, shape, profile, and texture.

    Implant Placement Position

Breast implants can be placed submuscularly, which means that they are positioned beneath the pectoral muscle. They can also be placed subglandularly meaning that they are inserted in front of the pectoral muscle and right behind the breast tissue.

The degree of invasiveness for each of these options varies, and the surgeon will help the patient make a suitable choice on the placement of the breast implants.

    Incision Locations

The surgeon may undertake breast augmentation by placing an incision right beneath the breast crease at the base of the breast, along the border of the areola’s lower half, on in the armpit. In rare cases, the surgeon will make place the incision through the navel.

The patient should freely and openly ask the surgeon any questions or express doubts that they may have about the plastic surgery.

    Suitable Candidates

The main priority of the surgeon is establishing the candidate as a patient for breast enhancement during the consultation process. The surgeon will perform a general health examination and review the breast anatomy, and skin texture and elasticity.

Additionally, the surgeon will evaluate the medical and surgical history of the patient and may order medical tests if required. They will incorporate the patient’s aesthetic objectives into the individualized breast augmentation plan.

    Guidelines for Preparation and Recovery

If the patient smokes, she will need to discontinue smoking for several weeks pre and post-surgery. The surgeon provides the patient with guidelines on this during the pre-op consultation.

They may also change the patient’s schedule of prescription medicines, blood thinners, and herbal supplements in discussion with the prescribing doctor.

The consultation process will also include various other facets such as the estimated costs of breast enhancement, financing options, before and after images, and patient testimonials.
