    What is liposuction surgery?

shutterstock 15897937 220x300 - What is liposuction surgery?Liposuction plastic surgery helps remove excess pockets of fat from specific body areas to enhance the figure. The hips, thighs, buttocks, love handles, saddlebags, breasts, arms, back, ankles, neck, and calves are some common sites for liposuction surgery.

This surgery is frequently performed along with other procedures to create more complete outcomes.

ASPS data indicates that, at present, liposuction ranks as the second most sought-after plastic surgery in the US. Cutting-edge techniques such as ultrasound and laser are sometimes combined with liposuction for more comprehensive results.

The Virginia Institute of Plastic Surgery, led by board certified plastic surgeons Dr. Burton M. Sundin and Dr. Reps B. Sundin, provides liposuction to patients in Northern Virginia, Washington DC, Vienna, McLean, Loudoun, Ashburn, Tysons Corner, Reston, Arlington, Chevy Chase, Richmond, Fredericksburg, and surrounding communities.

    Ideal Candidates

People with the following attributes may be suitable candidates for liposuction plastic surgery:

    • The presence of localized fatty pockets that are unresponsive to diet or exercise.
    • Desire to enhance body contours and develop a sleeker and more proportionate figure.
    • Fairly elastic skin in the treatment areas or the candidate is amenable to a body lift procedure along with liposuction.
    • Stable body weight with the patient no more than 20 pounds over their ideal weight and in good overall health.
    • Reasonable expectations and understanding that liposuction is not a procedure meant for weight loss, skin tightening, or cellulite reduction.

The principle of suction forms the basis of removing undesirable fat from the body through liposuction. The surgeon places tiny incisions in the targeted sites through which the surgeon will insert a narrow cannula, and move it around to dislodge stubborn fat deposits. They will then suction these fat cells out with a syringe or a pump attached to the cannula’s outer end.

Tumescent liposuction technique involves only the use of local anesthesia. Before the surgery, the local anesthetic solution will be injected into the patient to cause blood vessel shrinkage.

This minimizes blood loss as well as post-op pain and bleeding. Furthermore, it negates the need for general anesthesia.

At times, the surgeon may perform ultrasound assisted liposuction. In this procedure, they will use a special handpiece to deliver ultrasound energy into the deeper fat laser to loosen and melt fat. This plastic surgery technique is appropriate for more significant areas and dense fat elimination in a less invasive manner.

Laser-assisted liposuction procedures such as SlimLipo or SmartLipo are also increasingly becoming popular. Similar to ultrasound energy, laser energy also helps dislodge stubborn fat enabling the fat removal to be more targeted and less traumatic.

Depending on the patient’s condition and their personal aesthetic goals, the surgeon will recommend the most suitable technique.

The patient will need to rest at home for the initial week following liposuction. But they should undertake gentle walks and light activities at home to enhance blood flow. The surgeon may prescribe pain meds to manage the initial mild pain and discomfort.

At the end of the first week, the drains and sutures are usually removed.
