Hair Loss Restoration
Nanofat is combined with PRP and injected into the scalp during hair restoration. Nanofat, along with PRP, causes damaged and miniaturized hair follicles to become larger and healthier, creating better hair growth.
Nanofat enhances the proliferation rate of human follicular cells and PRP contains a significant amount of growth factors that encourage angiogenesis and localized cell growth.
Virginia Institute of Plastic Surgery (VIPS) and Modern Body Contouring & Laser Center (MBody), led by board certified plastic surgeons Dr. Burton M. Sundin and Dr. Reps B. Sundin, provides nanofat based treatments to patients in Northern Virginia, Washington DC, Vienna, McLean, Loudoun, Ashburn, Tysons Corner, Reston, Arlington, Chevy Chase, Richmond, Fredericksburg, and surrounding locations.
Adipose-derived stem cell-conditioned medium (ADSC-CM) loaded with growth factors, such as vascular endothelial growth factor, hepatocyte growth factor, platelet-derived growth factor, and insulin-like growth factor.
Vascular endothelial growth factor regulates hair growth and follicle size through the process of angiogenesis. Hepatocyte growth factor is involved in cyclic hair follicle growth.
Platelet-derived growth factor initiates and maintains the anagen phase of hair follicles. Insulin-like growth factor regulates the hair growth cycle as well as differentiation of hair shafts. Treatment with adipose-derived stem cell-conditioned medium causes each growth factor to activate hair follicles and contribute to the increasing number of hairs in alopecia patients.
Platelet-rich Plasma (PRP) has been proven to have multiple growth factors. PRP therapy involves collecting the candidate’s blood and spinning it down into a concentrate of plasma with a high concentration of platelets.
Subsequently, this is injected back into the candidate’s scalp. Studies have shown to improve growth after hair transplant surgery and increase hair counts when used in male and female pattern hair loss.
In this procedure, around 15cc of fat liposuctioned in the abdomen region (minimally invasive) that is then liquefied and combined with 15 to 16cc of super concentrated PRP. The objective of nanofat injection along with PRP is to reverse the initial stages of hair loss caused by bald spots, thinning hair, and receding hairlines.
Issues Addressed with Nanofat and PRP
Nanofat and PRP injections for hair loss can address the following concerns, among others:
- Receding hairline
- Thinning hair
- Bald spots
The two major benefits of this treatment are as follows:
- Decreased rate of rejection
- Decreased allergic responses
No specific recovery is necessary. A majority of patients will be able to resume their normal routine in around two days. Compression garments to be worn which are particularly designed for drainage of residual anesthetic solutions in the sites of liposuction.
Good candidates for nanofat and PRP injections for hair loss are in the initial stages of hair loss. Candidates should have reasonable expectations as the outcomes can differ between patients, and permanence of outcomes may not be guaranteed.
Patients with critical low platelet count, hemodynamic instability, hypofibrinogenemia, or those who have hair loss due to drugs, stress, or medical treatment are not recommended nanofat and PRP injections.
The side effects from nanofat and PRP injections for hair loss may include pinpoint bleeding, redness, and minimal pain when the injections are being administered. Certain patients report a “tight” or “full” feeling in the scalp right after the injections that can last for up to one day. In rare instances, patients will complain of a mild headache on the following day.
Cosmetic surgeons at VIPS and MBody receive patients from Northern Virginia, Washington DC, Vienna, McLean, Loudoun, Ashburn, Tysons Corner, Reston, Arlington, Chevy Chase, Richmond, Fredericksburg, and nearby areas for nanofat based treatments.
