For the past three decades, liposuction has remained one of the most popular plastic surgery procedures. This procedure may be a suitable option for people who are seeking a slimmer, more sculpted body shape.
Liposuction is a proven and safe procedure that eliminates stubborn fat pockets from precise areas of the body.
Liposuction is usually undertaken in combination with other plastic surgery procedures such as breast augmentation or abdominoplasty. It can successfully remove persistent fat deposits that are unresponsive to diet and exercise.
The Virginia Institute of Plastic Surgery, led by board certified plastic surgeons Dr. Burton M. Sundin and Dr. Reps B. Sundin provides liposuction body contouring to patients in Northern Virginia, Washington DC, Vienna, McLean, Loudoun, Ashburn, Tysons Corner, Reston, Arlington, Chevy Chase, Richmond, Fredericksburg, and surrounding communities.
Good candidates for liposuction will have the following characteristics:
- Stubborn, localized fat pockets that are unresponsive to diet and exercise
- A desire to the enhance the body contours and attain a more defined physique
- Fairly elastic skin in the treatment area or the candidate is willing to undergo a body lift along with liposuction
- Stable body weight with the candidate within 20 pounds of their ideal weight and in good overall health
- Reasonable expectations and the understanding that liposuction is not designed for weight-loss, cellulite reduction, or skin tightening
Treatable Body Areas
Liposuction plastic surgery is not meant to be a weight-loss procedure. Rather, it is most effective in removing fat from specific areas of the body to enhance the overall body contours. Liposuction can be quite effective on areas such as the abdomen, thighs, flanks, breasts, hips, buttocks, arms.
In traditional liposuction, the surgeon uses a thin tube (cannula), which is connected to a powerful suction pump. The surgeon will make a small incision and then insert the cannula through this incision to disintegrate the fat and inject fluid into the area.
This surgery is associated with certain risks. But traditional liposuction can remove fat quite successfully. It remains one of the most popular types of liposuction.
While traditional liposuction and tumescent liposuction are similar procedures, experts often consider tumescent liposuction as a superior procedure due to its innovative use of medication and reduced risks of complications.
The surgeon injects a special solution (a mixture of lidocaine, salt solution, and epinephrine) into the fat layer during this procedure. The quantity of fluid is usually three times the amount of fat being removed.
Due to this solution, the fat cells swell making it easier to isolate and eliminate these cells. In addition, it shrinks the blood cells, and as it contains local anesthesia, it reduces the discomfort of the patient without the risks associated with general anesthesia.
The minimal risks associated with tumescent liposuction are related to the amount of solution injected as well as the quantity of lidocaine it contains.
Ultrasonic or Laser Liposuction
Ultrasound or laser-assisted liposuction involves the use of a specialized cannula that emits ultrasonic sound waves or laser beams into the fatty deposits. This liquefies the fat cells allowing easier removal. By using ultrasound or laser technology, the surgeon can eliminate more substantial and thicker pockets of fat and tighten the surrounding skin simultaneously.
The patient will need to recover at home for the initial week after the liposuction. But they should take gentle walks around their home and perform light activities to enhance blood flow. The surgeon may prescribe pain meds to manage the initial discomfort and pain.
