Breast Implant Exchange
Breast augmentation revision surgery requires replacing existing implants with fresh breast implants. This technique is also known as breast implant exchange. It’s crucial that patients consult with an experienced plastic surgeon if they want a breast implant exchange or want them removed entirely.
During the initial consultation, your cosmetic surgeon will review your surgical and medical history. They will also get an understanding of your cosmetic goals to come up with the most suitable breast implant exchange surgery option.
The Virginia Institute of Plastic Surgery and Modern Body Contouring & Laser Center, led by board certified plastic surgeons Dr. Burton M. Sundin and Dr. Reps B. Sundin, provide breast implant exchange surgery to patients in the greater Washington DC area.
When is Breast Implant Exchange Surgery Required?
Patients may need to have this cosmetic surgery for several reasons, such as:
- Desire for smaller or larger sized breast implants
- Unsatisfactory results from the previous surgery
- Breast implant rupture (ranging from subtle leaks to full deflation)
- Desire for a different shape or type of breast implants
- Capsular contracture, in which scar tissues constrict the breast implant
- Shifting of the implant position
- Change in breast tissue, because of weight loss, skin stretching, pregnancy, and weight gain
Procedure of Breast Implant Exchange
Your doctor will discuss all concerns leading to you seeking the revision breast surgery during the initial consultation. This includes whether you are satisfied with your breast shape, size, and positioning.
The plastic surgeon will also inquire whether you face any surgical complications or are experiencing something unusual. This information is taken into account while creating a customized breast revision procedure treatment plan for addressing all your needs and concerns.
The exact nature of the revision surgery, including the recovery period and duration of the procedure will depend on individual factors. In case of breast implant exchange, the surgeon will want to know whether you want the implants removed completely, or are looking for a replacement. They will also ask whether you simply want the existing implants shifted to a new position, such as the chest or under the pectoral muscle.
The procedure is typically performed under general anesthesia. However, it can also be performed using a combination of local anesthesia and IV sedative. The procedure takes about three hours to complete. The surgery is similar to the initial breast augmentation procedure besides typical changes made.
Recovering From Breast Implant Exchange
The recovery following breast implant exchange plastic surgery procedure is similar to recovering from the standard breast enhancement surgery. However, the symptoms during recovery from a secondary surgical procedure are generally more complicated as compared to the primary surgery.
You may experience moderate to severe discomfort and pain during the initial 4 to 5 days following the revision procedure. The treated area may be swollen, bruised, tender, or numb. These symptoms are normal and can be relieved using cold packs or by taking oral pain medication as directed by the surgeon.
Patients may also experience a tingling sensation and changes in nipple sensation, besides permanent or temporary numbness. Cosmetic surgeons at the Virginia Institute of Plastic Surgery and Modern Body Contouring & Laser Center receive patients from greater Washington DC area for breast implant exchange surgery.
