Breast Augmentation Plastic Surgery in Washington DC

shutterstock 71274403 225x300 - Breast Augmentation Plastic Surgery in Washington DCBreast augmentation refers to a plastic surgery procedure in which the shape and size of a woman’s breasts are enhanced, typically through placing an implant within each breast.

The breasts can also be made larger by harvesting fat from another area of the patient’s body, such as the buttocks or abdomen.

    Key Reasons

Mammoplasty, or breast augmentation, is usually undertaken for cosmetic reasons. A patient may seek mammoplasty to add fullness to disproportionately small breasts, restore proportion to asymmetrical breasts, or simply create a more sensuous body shape.

The Virginia Institute of Plastic Surgery, led by board certified plastic surgeons Dr. Burton M. Sundin and Dr. Reps B. Sundin, receives patients from Richmond, Fredericksburg, Tysons Corner, Northern Virginia, Washington DC, and surrounding locations for breast implants.

    Customizable Procedure

Breast augmentation surgery is sought-after primarily as it can easily be individualized to the specific needs of a particular patient. Women seeking mammoplasty have various options that they can choose from. This offers them a significant level of control over their final results. These options include the following:

    Breast Implant Type

In the US, women can currently choose between saline-filled implants, silicone gel-filled implants, and form-stable ultra-cohesive silicone gel-filled (also known as “gummy bear”) implants.

    Placement of Breast Implants

The implant can be placed in pockets created either underneath the pectoral muscle or in front of the pectoral muscle, right behind the breast tissue.

    Location of the Incision

The placement of breast implants can be done through inframammary incisions (right below the crease at the base of the breast), periareolar incisions (along the border of the areola’s lower half), or transaxillary incisions (in the armpit).Breast implant size, profile, texture, and shape are some other options. Every decision that a woman makes on her breast augmentation will eventually have an impact on her final outcomes.

    Surgical Procedure

Breast augmentation plastic surgery commences with an incision placed either in the breast crease (inframammary), the armpit (transaxillary), the navel (TUBA), or the perimeter of the areola (periareolar). Discreet incision placement is one of the main goals for both the surgeon and patient during breast augmentation surgery.

The two primary methods of implant placement used in mammoplasty are subglandular breast implant placement (where the implant is positioned in front of the pectoral muscle and right behind the breast tissue) and submuscular breast implant placement (where the implant is placed under the pectoral muscle).

Certain surgeons advocate placing the breast implant in front of the chest muscle during augmentation surgery as this approach helps reduce post-op pain and soreness.

Other surgeons recommend the placement of breast implants under the pectoral muscles to prevent impediments in future mammograms. The patient should discuss these options with her surgeon and arrive at a decision based on her preference and body type.

After placing the implant, the surgeon will carefully suture the incision. Some surgeons prefer traditional sutures while others use dissolvable ones.

If the patient receives traditional stitches, the surgeon will remove them between one to two weeks of her breast augmentation procedure. The surgeon will determine when the incision has been sealed properly and no longer requires sutures. Dissolvable, or absorbable sutures will be disintegrated by the body and disappear without any intervention.

    Recovery from Surgery

Patients considering breast augmentation must budget time for recovery. The patient can maximize her comfort and reduce the duration of her recovery by avoiding vigorous activities and following her surgeon’s guidelines as closely as possible.
