When diet and exercise aren’t helping you achieve the slim and toned silhouette you want, consider the benefits of of a body contouring procedure like BodyTite. BodyTite is a liposuction technique that uses radio frequency (RF) energy to firm and tighten loose skin while removing excess fat. It’s a popular procedure for women and men who want to get rid of stubborn fat, tighten up loose skin, and improve their self-confidence.

Board certified (ABPS) plastic surgeons Dr. Burton Sundin and Dr. Reps Sundin at the Virginia Institute of Plastic Surgery and Modern Body Contouring and Laser Center (MBody), with locations in Richmond, VA and Tysons Corner, VA, are proud to offer the BodyTite procedure at their practice. They have helped many patients achieve beautiful results with this body contouring procedure. Unlike traditional liposuction, BodyTite offers the added benefit of reducing the risk of loose skin after fat removal and can also increase collagen production so the skin stays firm and resilient.

While liposuction removes fat permanently, there is a risk of being left with loose skin that doesn’t always bounce back after surgery. To prevent this from happening, Dr. Sundin can use radiofrequency energy as part of the procedure to help firm up the tissue and tighten the skin. RF energy can be powerful enough to stimulate collagen production which in turn makes the skin smoother and more resilient over time. BodyTite is unique because it heats up the dermal tissue as well as adipose tissue during surgery. The heat can help melt down the fat cells for easier removal.

The ideal candidate for BodyTite is someone who has moderate skin laxity but also wants to have fat removed permanently. Patients who already have loose skin or those who need to have a significant amount of fat removed may be better candidates for tummy tuck surgery or a body lift procedure. Dr. Sundin can make a recommendation after an evaluation and learning more about your goals.

In most cases, BodyTite is performed under local or general anesthesia, depending on the areas being treated. Once the area has been numbed, an internal probe is inserted into the tissue and an electrode attached to the probe heats the fatty tissue as well as superficial tissue right under the skin. This heat helps break down the fat cells so the fat can be removed quickly and efficiently with a cannula, a suction-like device. The heat from the treatment helps trigger collagen production throughout the treatment area because the body detects an injury. Dr. Sundin uses just enough heat to avoid causing permanent damage to the tissue and excessive scarring.

BodyTite applicators can help to shape and contour several problem areas of the body, including the love handles, buttocks, abdomen, hips, and inner or outer thighs. Smaller applicators can be used to treat the knees or the areas around the arms. After surgery, the treated areas will be swollen and tender. You may need to wear a compression garment to support the healing process but most patients see results after the initial swelling subsides.
