Tummy Tuck

unspecified 4 300x247 - Tummy Tuck

A tummy tuck, or abdominoplasty, is one of many procedures performed by The Virginia Institute of Plastic Surgery. It is designed to address sagging abdominal skin, separated abdominal muscles, and stubborn fat throughout the midsection.

Major weight loss and pregnancy are common causes for the skin to lose its elastic quality and for the muscles to separate.

Abdominoplasty is generally an outpatient procedure and can last 2 to 5 hours for a full tummy tuck or 1 to 2 hours for a partial tummy tuck.

The procedure begins with a horizontal incision between the pubic hairline and the belly button along the natural fold of the waistline to minimize visibility. Size and length will vary depending on the scope of the tummy tuck.

From there, excess tissue and fat are gently removed via liposuction. In many cases, the doctor will also restore weakened or separated muscles along the abdominal wall in addition to the traditional removal of sagging skin. This process helps to reverse the signs of pregnancy by creating tighter contours along the midsection. The underlying muscles are repaired and sutured. The skin is then re-draped over the abdomen to restore the skin’s natural elasticity.

The final results for this procedure can be fully appreciated once the bruising and swelling subside. The recovery time varies depending on the magnitude and scope of the tummy tuck. Patients are typically able to stand upright after a week or two. In two to four weeks, most patients are back to work. More strenuous activity should be postponed for at least a month after surgery.

With a balanced diet and regular exercise, a tummy tuck can deliver long-lasting, firm abdominal contours.

If you are in good general health and have a positive attitude and realistic expectations, you are most likely a suitable candidate for this procedure.
